Acknowledged world over as one of the most beautiful country, Switzerland is quickly becoming known for its high education standards and its advancements in ground breaking research and development. With a high number of German speaking people the language is one of the four official languages in Switzerland, including French, Italian and Romansh. This aspect alone influences its international appeal and has hence gained popularity among students looking to study abroad.

Cities in Switzerland

Berne is the administrative capital whereas Lausanne serves as the judicial capital of Switzerland. Majority of the population is situated in the larger cities which include Zurich, Basel, Geneva, Bern and Lausanne. Most of these cities have managed to preserve the old world charm and at the same time boast an amazing number of great restaurants, bars, etc.

Transportation in Switzerland

The main artery of European trans-Alpine traffic, the Saint Gotthard Pass, runs through Swiss territory. The 12.5-mile (20-km) Simplon Tunnel and the famous winding tunnels of the Saint Gotthard railway are located in Switzerland. The main airports are in Zürich (Kloten) and Geneva (Cointrin). Bern (Belpmoos) and Lugano (Agno) have international flights and a few domestic flights, and Mulhouse in France is used by Basel.

Culture in Switzerland

In spite of being a small country Switzerland has an impressive list of contributors to the field of arts and science. Many a known Nobel Prize winners are from this country and has over 1000 museums. The country attracts large number of tourists and art culture enthusiasts annually for its various events like the Paléo Festival, Lucerne Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Locarno International Film Festival and the Art Basel.

Cost of Living

The average cost of living in Switzerland can be a bit on the higher side, but that is to be expected. With the right kind of planning and approach a lot of the additional expenses can be reduced and student often find it worth wile. On an average if you are to include accommodation, food, daily necessities and transportation the costs can be anywhere between 1000 to 1300 Euros per month. This will change depending on the students’ lifestyle choices as well.
